Beastie Boys 2005 Solid Gold Hits (Dig)

Christopher says:

A total cash in. They released two greatest hits albums inn a row. What are they, the Smiths? I got this for free, I wouldn't buy it because I already have the Sounds of Science. - Feb 8, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Beck 1996 Odelay

Christopher says:

I think of this more as a Dust Brothers album (sort of like Paul's Boutique). It's real good. Beck ably lends a hand to the performance. - Feb 8, 2007

Beck 1998 Mutations

Christopher says:

I got this for free. I'm not big on the more mopey stuff he does. Also, the Scientology thing is way creepy. - Feb 8, 2007

Bennett, Tony 1987 Jazz

Best Pop Album of the 80's Ever 2005 Best Pop Album of the 80's Ever

Christopher says:

Overall, a pretty good Canadian compilation of 80's pop. Luckily, it has a focus on British imports. Britain owned the 80's music scene AFIK - a US compilation would have to include shit like Night Ranger and Toto. Instead, this includes Drugs in my Pocket by the Monks. - Apr 18, 2007

Bettie Serveert 1995 Lamprey

Christopher says:

Ray Ray Rain is so dreamy. That's why I have this. - Feb 8, 2007

Betty Carter 1990 Compact Jazz

Christopher says:

A weird compilation. You get very little indication of what kind of performer she is. - Feb 8, 2007

Bif Naked 1999 I Bificus

Big Star 1972 #1 Record/Radio City

Christopher says:

For all the praise, I don't find this all that likeable. It's one of those CDs I force myself to listen to because it's important. Maybe that's the problem. I think Velvet Crush are better. - Feb 8, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Big Stick 2002 Crack 'n' Drag

Christopher says:

Combines two EPs. The tracks from their first EP appeal more to me - Crack Attack was too different. Drag Racing/Hell on Earth is easily the best track(s) of them all and will live on in eternity. - Mar 30, 2007

Bill Laswell 1999 Imaginary Cuba

Christopher says:

The Cuban music he's compiled here may be authentic, but it's not the nicest sounding stuff. I appreciate the dub environment thing, but, the listening experience is only okay. - Feb 8, 2007

Billy Bang/Craig Harris/Henry Threadgill 1993 Hip Hop Be Bop

Björk 2000 Selmasongs

Christopher says:

Bjork goes Hollywood. Sort of. A good, if short album probably the last commercial album she released. Very short. - Feb 8, 2007

Björk 2001 Vespertine

Christopher says:

Probably the sweetest sounding Bjork. It shows what a fine craftsman she is - everything is needle sharp and delicate on this album. - Apr 17, 2007

Bjork 1995 Post

Christopher says:

The poppiest Bjork album. Good to play when you're doing chores or driving. Sounds best when played loud. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Bjork 1997 Telegram

Christopher says:

Because they're mixes, there's no continuity - a key part of Bjork albums. Like all mix albums, some tracks are good and some are bad. I swear that the mix of I Miss You is exactly the same as the album track. But, whatever. - Feb 20, 2007

Bjork 1997 Homogenic

Christopher says:

My favourite Bjork, I think. Bridges the pop/experimental thing the best of her albums. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Bjork 2004 Medulla

Christopher says:

Beautiful sounds throughout. Really interesting choices for collaborators. You can tell that she made this record for herself, not you. - Feb 8, 2007

Blind Boys of Alabama 2005 Atom Bomb

Christopher says:

The title track is good, but these guys aren't my favourites. They feel very packaged to me, like a boyband, but old and blind. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Blondie 1990 Best of Blondie

Christopher says:

One of those essential albums.
For whatever reason, I only have Blondie compilations, but they are best as an album band. I really should get Plastic Letters and Parallel Lines. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Blondie 2002 Greatest Hits (CD+DVD)

Christopher says:

Sounds great and includes tracks not found on the Best of Blondie. But I think it's missing Denis, or some less popular track. The DVD is a real bonus. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Blossom Dearie 1956 Blossom Dearie

Christopher says:

I could listen to Blossom forever.
All Blossom Dearie is great. It's surprising that her little girl voice doesn't get tiresome. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Blossom Dearie 1957 Give Him the Ooh La La

Christopher says:

Good stuff, but the placement of the bonus track is annoying. "Didn't she just sing that song?" - Feb 20, 2007

Blossom Dearie 1959 Blossom Dearie Sings Comden & Green

Christopher says:

More excellent Blossom Dearie. With a really goofy cover; everyone looks a bit embarrassed. - Feb 20, 2007

Blues Brothers 1992 Blues Brothers - The Definitive Collection

Blues Brothers 1995 Briefcase Full of Blues

Blur 1991 Leisure

Christopher says:

Blur's only good album.
It has a cool 80's psychedelic sound that they abandoned completely on subsequent albums. I know that bands have to change, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Bomb the Bass 2006 Into the Dragon

Christopher says:

Beat Dis
I bought this only for Beat Dis, but ended up liking the rest of the album. There are some other standout tracks here. Of course, I can't think of them now. - Mar 30, 2007

Boredoms 1993 Pop Tatari

Christopher says:

Contains my favourite Boredoms song - Noise Ramones, which is three tones played in escalating order for 10 seconds each. So brilliant. - Feb 20, 2007

Boredoms 1993 Soul Discharge

Christopher says:

More dumb stuff. Good dumb. - Feb 20, 2007

Boredoms 1994 Pop Kiss

Christopher says:

Probably a good introduction CD because it's relatively short. Probably not short enough for some. - Feb 20, 2007

Boredoms 1994 Onanie Bomb Meets Sex Pistols

Christopher says:

Early stuff
I think this is a compilation of their early singles. Anyway, it's silly and noisy and great. Boredoms rule. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Boredoms 1995 Chocolate Synthesizers

Christopher says:

Dumb and fun and loud
This is the fun stuff they did before they turned to that drumming drone thing. It's hard to believe they're on the same label as Frank Sinatra. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Boredoms 1996 Super Roots 6

Christopher says:

Noisy noise noise
Scream thud scream bonk bonk kerrang! Scream. - Jul 5, 2007

Boredoms 1998 Super Are

Boredoms 2007 Super Roots 8

Christopher says:

The lead track is surprisingly coherent and listener-friendly - the remixes are similarly pleasant. Kind of a letdown. - Sep 26, 2007

Bow Wow Wow 1993 Best of Bow Wow Wow

Christopher says:

The funny thing about Bow Wow Wow is that they're actually very good. It goes far beyond I Want Candy, the musicianship (esp. the drumming) and the songwriting are both very adept and witty.

They have such a fucked up discography, it's safest to just buy a compilation. This one's fine, and has all the "hits". - Apr 10, 2007

Bowie, David
The Pogues
The Pretenders
XTC
Squeeze
Wall of Voodoo
Throwing Muses

1996 New Wave Xmas: Just Can't Get Enough

Christopher says:

A mixed bag. Some crap, some classics. - Feb 19, 2007

Boyd Rice 2008 Boyd Rice Presents: Music For Pussycats

Breeders 1993 Last Splash

Christopher says:

One of the best albums of the 90's.
Kim's voice is just great throughout. Cannonball is one of many standout tracks. - Feb 20, 2007

Broadcast 1997 Work & Non Work

Christopher says:

Duophonic
You can hear the Stereolab influence the most of this album. That's not a bad thing. - Feb 20, 2007

Broadcast 2000 Noise Made By People

Christopher says:

The first album
Such pretty stuff. Spooky and spacey. - Feb 20, 2007

Broadcast 2003 Haha Sound

Christopher says:

A sharp turn to the left
Way different from the previous albums, with a less soft sound and less song-y songs. It was a surprise, but it gets better with every listen. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Broadcast 2005 Tender Buttons

Christopher says:

Weirder and weirder
They still sound like themselves, but their music keeps moving towards the experimental. Sounds like someone sinking into schizophrenia. - Feb 20, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Broadcast 2006 the Future Crayon

Christopher says:

A collection of hard-to-find its and pieces that weren't on their albums proper. I'm happy to have it, but it would have been nice if they included their videos and the Microtronics eps. - Feb 20, 2007

Brown, James 1971 Love Power Peace (Live Paris 1971)

Christopher says:

I know I've said in other reviews that I don't like live recordings, but this one is good. Like, better than Live at the Apollo good. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1988 Jb's Funky People 2

Christopher says:

Features strong instrumental funk playing, but the songs aren't as catchy as Vol. 1. The best part is the last track, Blow Your Head, with James Brown playing a crazy spaced-out organ. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1990 CD of Jb

Christopher says:

Well done compilation that mixes the overly played with the less known tracks. This, and the follow-up (CD of JB II) were what really set off my passion in JB's music. This disc is also valuable in that it contains some mixes that haven't shown up in other compilations. And I'm all about the full versions of JB songs. - Apr 3, 2007

Brown, James 1990 CD of JB II: Cold Sweat and Other Soul Classics

Christopher says:

You gotta like a CD that closes with Get Up Offa That Thing. Like its predecessor, this is a well mixed CD, including the familiar and the notso familiar. And like the first, this one has mixes that haven't shown up elsewhere. - Apr 3, 2007

Brown, James 1990 In the Jungle Groove

Christopher says:

A great compilation full of driving, hard hitting funk. This is the album that launched a zillion hiphop songs. Funky Drummer is probably the most sampled song in history, and some of the other tracks became classic backing loops as well. The bonus beat reprise is a bit taxing after the first listen, but its historical importance makes up for it. - Apr 3, 2007

Brown, James 1990 Motherlode

Christopher says:

Unreleased material.
These are tracks discovered by Polydor's JB experts digging through the vaults, which is pretty cool. It's surprising how good some of the tracks are. There's even an untitled track. I bought it when it first came out - later there was a re-release with bonus tracks, which pissed me off, but I can't drive myself to replace it. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1991 Star Time

Christopher says:

An excellent boxset
I was worried when this came out because I had a bunch of excellent JB CDs already and figured this boxset would either duplicate what I had or not be nearly as good. I was pleasantly surprised at how comprehensive the set is and by the number of extended mixes that were not previously released on CD. It covers his career by breaking it up into 4 phases: R&B, early funk, heavy funk, and his later works. Luckily, Living in America is nowhere to be seen. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1993 Soul Pride: Instrumentals 1960-69

Christopher says:

Sometimes, you just want JB to shut up. Well, here you are - all instrumentals. There is the odd scream or shout here and there, but it's all instrumental otherwise. This shows off the how strong JB's backing bands have been and also shows that he's no slouch himself when it comes to playing. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1995 Roots of a Revolution

Christopher says:

The early stuff
Not my favourite JB period, but it's all good. Luckily, it focuses less on hits than it does on notable/overlooked tracks, which I think makes it more valuable. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1995 Messing With the Blues

Christopher says:

Quieter and less funky than my more favoured James Brown CDs. I usually pass on blues music, but I like this. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 1998 Dead on the Heavy Funk

Christopher says:

Probably my least lsitened to JB CD
This CD chronicles the period that marked JB's musical decline and his experiments with disco. Not my favourite period. Still, it's good for the odd spin every now and again. After all, it's still a James Brown CD. - Apr 3, 2007

Brown, James 2000 Jb's Funky People 3

Christopher says:

For some reason, there was a 12 year gap between the release of Vols 2 and 3. The best track is easily the rock version of Talking Loud and Saying Nothing, which is sort of a shock. - Apr 4, 2007

Pls. login or register to reply

Brown, James 2001 Live at the Apollo 2 (Dlx) (Dig)

Christopher says:

I'm not a big fan of live recordings. I prefer production values and polish (where appropriate). And the funny thing is, James pretty well gives a "live" performance in all his recorings anyway. So, even though it's a jewel of his catalogue, this is probably my least favourite JB CD.

For me, the bonus with this CD is that it's been recontructed to reflect the actual show, not chopped up to fit on an LP. I'm all over that restoration shit. - Apr 4, 2007

Brown, James 2003 The Best of James Brown: The Christmas Collection (20th Century Masters)

Christopher says:

A welcome collection of tracks from three Christmas albums released by JB in the later 60's. Some of these songs used to show up on "kooky" compilation albums, but it took a long time for me to find a whole JB Christmas CD.

The songs are a mixture of JB soul ballads and standard Christmas songs. It's a weird mix, but it works if you're a JB fan. - Apr 3, 2007

Brown, James 2004 Duets

Christopher says:

A fun compilation (I like duets). Has really good, uncommon tracks with many of the stars in the Brother records stable.

For some reason, it's almost impossible to find information on this CD. I guess it's rare, which is a pity, given that it's one of the better JB compilations. - Apr 3, 2007
